Ancient Vessels

In this class we will explore ways to make small glass vessels that look like they’ve been dug up from an archeological dig. Using fine glass frit, reduction powders, and enamels, we will add texture and color to a base of the piece. Vessels are a classic ancient shape, and in this class we will focus on mastery of the vessel form with time to play with the decorative possibilities that powders can create. We will also explore using silver foil to create effects that give glass an ancient look. Students may make these pieces either as beads or off of the end of a mandrel so that the vessel hole does not go through the entire piece.

Fee: $150
Pre-requisite: No flameworking experience needed.

Create a glass corsage in two days with the highly popular artist and international teacher, Sara Sally LaGrand.

Students will be shown how to create glass sculptures using creative methods with the final design in mind. They will be making glass corsages of their own creation, not the exact piece shown, so each piece they create will be unique to them. Experimentation with color combinations will be encouraged. During the first day, students will learn how to create flameworked sculptural shapes. On the second day, they will learn wire working and assemblage of their corsages. Several years of flameworking experience required.

Class fee includes supplies.

Students need these tools:
    Personal lampworking tools
    Raking tools
    Pointed tweezers with no teeth
    Writing materials
    Wire working tools
        – jewelry pliers (chain nose) with no teeth
        - both heavy-duty and smaller wire cutters

Bio

Sara Sally LaGrand has had the great fortune to study with many gifted teachers both in Italy and the U.S. She has been melting glass since 1996. In that time she has won numerous awards and has the great privilege to teach workshops all over the U.S. and Europe.

She earned a BA in Glass Formation at Park University of Missouri with the collaboration of the award winning public glass artist, Dierk Van Keppel.

She continues to study and grow, pushing the limits of the glass and combining it with unconventional materials for an eclectic look at nature, life and pop culture.
