SAN JOSE, Calif. – April 9, 2012 – Local and nationally-recognized glass artists were awarded top honors for achievement at the Bay Area Glass Institute's, (BAGI), Eleventh Annual 2012 Great Glass Auction, on March 24, 2012 in Palo Alto, California. The auction attracted a full house of guests, including many of the contributing artists whose work was represented. A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the 2012 Saxe Fellowship at BAGI award. The jury's criteria for this award include the piece’s creativity and uniqueness of vision, its strong technical execution, and a meaning that goes beyond a well-executed piece. This year's winner was Los Angeles artist Jamie Guerrero for his work, “Charros y sus Caballos.” Guerrero was also awarded the 2012 People's Choice award, selected by auction attendees. The Jurors’ Choice Award went to Mountain View artist Demetra Theofanous for “Yesterday’s Reflection” and local San Jose artist Cassandra Straubing for “Monday Washday.”
This year's Saxe Fellowship award winner was chosen by a jury consisting of Karen Kienzle, Executive Director, Palo Alto Art Center, and world renowned collector Dorothy Saxe of San Francisco, California. As the winner of this award, Jamie Guerrero received a $2,000 cash prize and a funded invitation to participate in BAGI's Visiting Artists Series. Guerrero also received $1,000 for being The People's Choice award winner.

A crucial fundraiser for BAGI, the auction will provide a quarter of BAGI's operating budget for 2012. Its proceeds will be used to help fund the Visiting Artists Series planned for 2012, a SJSU scholarship for a student to attend each of BAGI's Visiting Artist Series master classes, new equipment and continuing operations, as well as expanded offerings for the community, including the building of a Mobile Hot Shop.
Steven Aldrich, BAGI’s Board President commented, “We were thrilled to raise over $70,000 from the Great Glass Auction this year. Jaime Guerrero is the first artist to collect the Saxe Fellowship Award and the People’s Choice Award in the same year. Over 100 patrons and artists attended. I heard from many that they enjoyed the evening and many of them want to help the mobile hot shop get launched into the community.

ABOUT THE BAY AREA GLASS INSTITUTE (BAGI)
The mission of the Bay Area Glass Institute (BAGI) is to make the celebration of glass art accessible to all and provide continued artistic and educational growth to artists, patrons and the community.
