Phil Vinson 2-Day Mold Making Course
Blowing glass into molds has been around since Roman times. It is a great way to make shapes and textures out of glass that would otherwise not be possible. There are a variety of materials that glassblowing molds can be made from that were explored in this workshop.
The first day included discussions & demonstrations, brainstorming & creating blow molds. The second day was about blowing glass into the freshly made molds. In addition to the molds created, there were a variety of other "funky" molds available to blow glass into.
Participants were encouraged to bring their own materials, whether they be metal, wood (solid wood only), graphite or found objects. Students were encouraged to think this thought when looking at an object - “What would it be like to blow glass into that?”.
Phil Vinson has been blowing glass for 18 years, and teaching workshops for the last 12. He has a wide range of experience not only in glass technique, but metal & wood as well. He has worked in the architectural & design manufacturing world on projects all over the country. His unique variety of experiences and technical know how greatly influence his not-so-traditional approach to creating objects out of glass.
