Fusing Glass 1B

This class is an in-depth exploration of fusing and kiln working techniques. We'll explore the many choices in glass design using frit, powders and textured glass. With two separate projects, you will be guided through the process of grinding, fusing and slumping. We'll also discuss firing schedules and learn about kilns.

Australian-Style Roll Up: Blowing Fused Glass

This course will introduce a hot, third dimension to kiln-formed work. The class will work in the Australian Roll-Up technique. A technique in which pre-fused glass tiles are picked up on a blowpipe and blown, or manipulated, into vessels and/or sculptural forms. Students will be introduced to both kiln working & furnace working in BAGI's studio. The class is interactive. Students will design, create, and either assists the instructor in blowing their piece or if the student is a glassblower, they will blow their own piece. The first day of class will be spent creating the kiln worked panels that will be fused and ready for  glassblowing on days 2 & 3 of the class. With the skills learned, kiln working students will have the knowledge, and the experience, to work with a gaffer to create their designs in a hot shop. Students who blow glass themselves will have learned a remarkable new technique that they malaise in the hot shop.
Fee: $450
Pre-requisite: Some fusing or glassblowing experience.

1650 F plus...

See what happens to fusing glass when it is super heated in the kiln. We will spend our first day building up our tiles for high fires -- prepping the shelves and building up a safe and effective dam system to hold the molten glass, and we will  set up ceramic pots for aperture pour ‘pot melts’.  Our focus will be on design and depth, color combining, as we fill our reservoir moulds with glass for melting, kiln safety for this sort of work will be addressed. The next day will focus on coldworking and how best to utilize these pieces for secondary firings.

Glory Hole and Kiln Forming

We will use hot working techniques with the fusible sheet glass to produce some unique patterns and designs in our glass. Glass bundles and tiles will be manipulated in the glory hole to form color twists, overlays, fold overs, and murrinis. We will then take the hot-manipulated parts to the kiln where they will become the starting point for making a larger fused pieces. This process is a way to make some very interesting and unique kiln formed glass.

Murrini and Pattern Bar Weekend

We will have two days of working in the studio, beginning with making murrinis in the glory hole and pattern bars in the kiln. On the second day, we will cut up these pieces and arrange them in the kiln for further firings into a more complex milieu. This class will demonstrate how to make these hot-worked and kilnformed elements and how to use them in a secondary firing. We will also examine the characteristics of working in the glory hole and the kiln to form these different decorative parts.

Strictly Strips

A weekend will be spent exploring all the aspects of strip construction. This technique, where designs are built up by placing strips of glass on edge, is a wonderful process for arranging designs in an even and orderly manner. We will cover methods for uniform strip cutting, blocking patterns, windows, stripes, and geometrics.
