BAGI has survived for sixteen years against all odds ... Help us continue that succes

Dear Friends,

Another year has gone by, my first as executive director, and our furnace is hot and bubbling with molten glass. We are still the only public access glass studio and school in the South Bay region, where local artists and glass enthusiasts can work, explore, grow and a new generation can be introduced to this art form that has been around for over two millennia.

Yes, BAGI survives as a non-profit, touching over 10,000 people every year, against all odds. We’re asking for your contribution because:

  • You are among a select group of discerning patrons supporting glass art which, like most visual arts and crafts, doesn’t have a long list of donors and robust foundation support;
  • Other crafts and visual arts don’t have the high fixed operating costs that glass art requires because the glass has to remain molten 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 2000F.

BAGI’s special story is one of determined survival because of a community that loves and supports the organization.  And we need your help to continue to fight the odds.

BAGI has many exciting things planned for 2013. The flame working studio will open with classes and the ability to rent torch time in the beginning of the year; and we will begin First Friday, You Design it We Make It, demonstrations in February.   We continue to fundraise for the Mobile Hot Shop and hope to make that a reality soon, so we can take glass on the road to a larger community.  We are also planning new and exciting classes, such as sand casting and fused marbles.  Along with the Great Glass Pumpkin Patch® and the Great Glass Auction we will be adding more events for the community to come and enjoy the magic of glass.

Although BAGI continues to make positive strides with education and event revenue, the expense of running a glass studio is great. It costs $20,000 a month to operate the hot shop 24/7 to continue the tradition and bring glass to a new generation.  I am asking you to join me in supporting the mission of the Bay Area Glass Institute, its wonderful staff and physical studio.

$25  Helps to purchase a tank of propane       $100 Keeps the furnace running for a day
$50  Helps to purchase one bag of color         $500 Offset the costs for a 3 hour demo
$75  Purchases a day’s worth of glass          $1,000 Pays the fee for a visiting artist to teach a two day workshop

Whether you’re an artist yourself or lover of the arts, your contribution is crucial to BAGI’s ability to continue providing a place to continue the ancient, and glorious, tradition of glass art.

Against all odds.

Thank you for your kind consideration and support,

 Joan L. Phillips
 Executive Director
